Hospital Radio is now live at The Royal Stoke University Hospital after an absence of 14 years, and is the latest addition to Hospital Radio Stafford’s (HRS) portfolio of broadcasting locations. The station is based at County Hospital in Stafford and broadcasts here as well as Katharine House Hospice in Stafford and Cannock Chase Hospital. It’s a fantastic step forward for the service, and now the patients and visitors of Stoke can enjoy the varied and exciting programme of shows on offer, free of charge.
Thank you to University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust for enabling this to happen.
North Staffordshire Hospital Broadcast Association was one of the first organisations in the country to broadcast to patients, originally broadcasting in 1954 and providing football commentary from Stoke City’s Victoria Ground. In the nineties the radio station was known as Forward Radio and closed in 2003, having been in existence for nearly 50 years.

Matt says “the reason I’ve done this is to raise money for two special charities – Dementia UK and Hospital Radio Stafford. Dementia UK carries out important research into the causes of Dementia and provides excellent support to those experiencing all forms of the illness. Hospital Radio Stafford ( a voluntary service I personally work for ) requires donations to carry on it’s wonderful services every day, helping to keep patients entertained during their stay at County Hospital Stafford, Cannock Chase Hospital and Katharine House Hospice “.
Well done Matt.
Hospedia has supplied listening data for the period Oct to Dec 2016 indicating that at County Hospital Stafford HRS is attracting above average radio listeners, and indicating that at Cannock Chase Hospital, Cannock average listener numbers have been steadily increasing but there is still more work to be done. HRS – the Voice of a Friend
Did you know that Hospital Radio Stafford broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to patients at County Hospital Stafford and Cannock Chase Hospital ?
We can also be heard at Katharine House Hospice if you attend Day Therapy sessions.
The great thing is that it’s free to listen too during your hospital stay and you can request a special song or favourite singer on our request shows as many times as you like !
Look out for our request collectors who visit most hospital wards during the week and make sure they give you a complimentary magazine and programme schedule.
Hospital Radio Stafford is always on the lookout for new volunteers.
You might be recently retired or work part-time or perhaps need a new hobby for your spare time.
If you can spare a few hours a week volunteering for HRS we’d love to hear from you.
You don’t need experience of working in local radio, we can provide that, all we want is enthusiastic people with spare time to devote to a very worthwhile local Charity.
Please come and join us and make a difference to the lives of patients in Staffordshire.
It costs around £2000 a year to keep Hospital Radio Stafford operating, all of which has to be raised by hardworking volunteers.
Sponsored events, raffles, donations and occasional funding gifts from local businesses are so important.
If you know someone who could make a donation to ensure that HRS stays broadcasting then please let us know.
Every £1 helps enormously !
On 26 February 2007 HRS commenced broadcasting 24 hours a day to patients in Staffordshire, a big step forward in it’s long term plan.
So, on 26 February 2017 we will have achieved yet another milestone – 10 years of 24 hour broadcasting.
We hope you continue to enjoy this free service whenever you are in hospital in Staffordshire.
